 We study phenomena occurring at solid surfaces and interfaces. In particular, we aim to gain a microscopic understanding of the rare events involved in catalysis, such as chemical reactions of adsorbed molecules and the associated charge and energy transfer. The interface is the stage for various microscopic transformation processes, but when chemical bonds are broken or electrons and energy are transferred, what is the structure and kinetic state of the main actors - atoms, molecules and the surrounding medium? What degrees of freedom drive the reaction? We tackle them by using various spectroscopic methods.
