Absorption of photons by matter induces various dynamical processes during the dissipation of excess energy. This includes the transfer of energy and charge and the breaking and formation of chemical bonds. On surfaces and interfaces, these dynamics play pivotal roles in elementary processes involved in photoinduced functions such as photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. We aim to reveal the microscopic mechanisms of these processes using molecular spectroscopic approaches. As these dynamics occur on an ultrafast time scale, we develop the techniques with single atomic layer sensitivity and femtosecond to picosecond time resolution.
